Long-lasting fencing installations in Canterbury
We recommend all timber used for new fences in Canterbury is supplied pressure-treated (“tanalised”) for the best possible lifespan. This treatment gives soft-wood fencing a typical 15–20 year life and is especially important for gravel boards that stay in contact with damp ground.
Whether you need a small repair or a whole garden re-fenced, we’ll advise the best option for your Canterbury property — no two jobs are the same.
What Canterbury customers say
Verified reviews from CT1 & East Kent
Boundary fence replacing a boundary wallI contacted Moores Fencing for advice on replacing a garage wall that sided onto a public footpath. Kieren came within a couple of days, gave honest advice, then quoted and worked hard to overcome every difficulty until the job was finished. Very tidy, cleaned up afterwards — very pleased with my new fence, it looks lovely.
A company you can trustKieren Moores is a very skilled and professional fencer and carpenter. All the work on my quotation was carried out with a minimum of fuss and to a high standard, including a new wooden gate built on site to ensure the finished product was a perfect fit.
First class fencing servicesKieren Moores was friendly, helpful and most professional in all respects. His firm provides a truly first class service from start to finish. I couldn’t be more pleased with their fencing work — 10/10 and most highly recommended.

Fencing FAQs
Do you need planning permission for a fence in Canterbury?
In most cases, no. You can usually put up a garden fence without planning permission as long as it’s no more than 2 metres high. If the fence borders a road or footpath it’s limited to 1 metre. Canterbury has extensive conservation areas across the city centre and a great many listed buildings, where stricter rules apply — we’ll check this for you before quoting.
What is the 2 metre fence rule?
The 2 metre fence rule means a fence in your garden can be up to 2 metres tall without needing planning permission. Anything taller, or a fence over 1 metre next to a road or pavement, may need permission. If you’re replacing an existing fence that’s already over 2 metres, the new one should be no higher.
How high can a garden fence be in Canterbury?
To stay within permitted development and keep on good terms with the neighbours, keep your fence under 2 metres in total height. Fences alongside a road or footpath are restricted to 1 metre. Adding a trellis on top counts towards the total height.
Who owns the fence — and who is responsible for it?
The only certain way to know is to check the title deeds for your property, which often mark boundary ownership with a ‘T’ symbol. In practice the question usually only comes up when a fence needs replacing. If ownership isn’t clear, it comes down to communication and common sense between neighbours — we’re happy to advise on what’s typical in Canterbury.
Who gets the good side of the fence?
It’s your fence, so you can have it whichever way round you like — the idea that you must give the neighbour the smooth side is a common myth, not a legal requirement. That said, facing the smooth side outward is considered good etiquette and looks tidier from the street.
How much does fencing cost in Canterbury?
Fencing costs in Canterbury depend on the type of fence, the length and how easy the area is to access. As a guide, most residential fencing jobs in East Kent fall between £600 and £1,330, with an average of around £900; larger projects can run from £900 to £2,000. No two jobs are the same, so we always provide a free, no-obligation site survey and an itemised quote before any work begins.
